The financial services industry has recently been facing strong headwinds. Consumer trust in financial institutions is still around the post subprime-crisis all-time low and new scandals such as the LIBOR manipulation, porous anti-money laundering practices and on-going bank bailouts financed by tax-payers money push people to look for alternative ways of financing and investing. At the same time, more rigorous regulation as well as fiery competition from Emerging Market players and Shadow banking institutions put an additional strain on Western banks' profitability. But how radical could the industry change within the next decade be and how should Western banks prepare?
